Spin Bikes: How the Investment Can Help Prevent a Stroke

Spin Bikes: How the Investment Can Help Prevent a Stroke

Every year, October 29th is International World Stroke Day. Emphasizing the seriousness and high rates of strokes worldwide, the day is observed to increase awareness. By raising awareness, prevention and treatments are also hot topics. At Fitness Equipment Maine, we love keeping our customers in tip-top shape, which is why we’re taking this moment to talk about spin bikes in correlation to stroke prevention.

Understanding a stroke

Chances are; you’ve heard of a stroke. However, how much do you really know and understand? A stroke is a disease affecting the arteries that lead to the brain. Damage to the brain is caused when the blood vessels carrying oxygen are blocked, interrupting the brain of its blood supply.

A stroke, no matter the severity, is a medical emergency.

There are three primary types of strokes: Ischemic, Hemorrhagic, and Transient ischemic attack (or mini-stroke). The ischemic accounts for the majority of cases, 87%, according to the CDC. Often, the cause is a result of a blood clot. The hemorrhagic stroke is caused when an artery in the brain leaks or ruptures. High blood pressure is often the primary factor leading to the hemorrhagic stroke. Lastly, the mini-stroke (or ischemic attack) differs because the blockage generally lasts no more than five minutes.

Signs and symptoms

One of the most crucial elements is understanding the signs – every minute counts during a stroke! A few of the most common symptoms of a stroke in both men and women include:

  • Sudden numbness in the face, arm, or leg – focused on one side of the body.
  • An onset of confusion, understanding, or trouble speaking.
  • Trouble seeing from one, or both, of the eyes.
  • Loss of balance, trouble working, lack of coordination
  • Sudden, severe headache with no explanation as to the cause

Calling 9-1-1 immediately is always the first action.

Preventative measures

While age and heritage play a role in stroke vulnerability, there are several things an individual can do to help prevent the onset of a stroke. And, you guessed it, exercise is one of those things!

Contributing to weight loss and lowering of blood pressure (two other recommended preventative actions), exercise is also a powerhouse on its own. According to studies conducted by Harvard Health, exercising at a moderate intensity at least five days per week can lower your risk of stroke.
